Iraq and Iran discuss strengthening bilateral relations and the Syrian issue / Expanded

The Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Russian Federation, Dr. Qahtan Taha Khalaf, met with the Assistant Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Asghar Haji, on the sidelines of the Astana talks on the Syrian issue.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that during the meeting, ways of joint cooperation in providing support and assistance to the Syrian Arab Republic were discussed through the Astana formula, which aims to enhance dialogue between all parties concerned with the Syrian crisis and provide the necessary solutions to solve it. The means for this file were to intensify cooperation among all parties.

The Ambassador stressed to the head of the Iranian delegation participating in the talks the need to include the Republic of Iraq in the quartet concerned with normalizing relations between Syria and Turkey, stressing Iraq’s keenness on the importance of uniting efforts to achieve remarkable progress in this regard.

The meeting also welcomed the steps to normalize relations between Tehran and Riyadh, as well as the return of Syria to the Arab League, while praising the roles played by Iraq in bringing the views of all parties closer together.

The meeting touched on the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Tehran, as they stressed the importance of continuing to develop relations in various fields in order to achieve the desire of both countries to perpetuate joint cooperation and preserve common interests.
