Iran Warns of Halting Cooperation with IAEA Amid Sanctions Threat

Tehran: The Iranian Supreme National Security Council announced that Tehran would cease cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog if UN sanctions are reinstated. This statement comes a day after Britain, France, and Germany triggered the "snapback" mechanism to re-impose sanctions on Iran.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the SNSC issued a firm statement criticizing the actions of the three European countries concerning the Iranian nuclear issue. Despite Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and its efforts to present plans to resolve the matter, the SNSC warned that the cooperation path with the Agency would be effectively suspended.

The SNSC meeting, chaired by the Islamic Republic of Iran's President Masoud Pezzekian, also addressed the regional situation and the actions of Israel, referred to as the "Zionist regime." The meeting emphasized Iran's policy to cooperate as much as possible to establish peace and stability in the region.

The statement highlighted the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' mission to continue consultations within the SNSC's decisions framework to protect Iran's national interests. This decision follows the UN Security Council's failure to adopt a draft resolution for permanently lifting sanctions on Tehran.

The UN Security Council's move followed the E3's initiation of a 30-day process to re-impose sanctions, accusing Tehran of not complying with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

President Pezzekian assured that Iran would overcome any re-imposition of sanctions through the "snapback" process. In his remarks on state television, he stated Iran's determination to resist excessive demands and emphasized the country's ability to change the situation.

Earlier this month, Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog announced a deal to resume inspections at sites, including those targeted by the US and Israel, without providing specifics.

If enforced, the snapback would re-impose an arms embargo, ban uranium enrichment and reprocessing, restrict ballistic missile activity, and include global asset freezes and travel bans on Iranian individuals and entities.
