Indian PM Engages with Japan, Canada, and Italy at G20 Summit

Johannesburg: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral meetings on Sunday with his counterparts from Japan, Canada, and Italy during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. These discussions focused on enhancing cooperation across various strategic sectors.

According to Kuwait News Agency, during Modi's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, both leaders reaffirmed the significance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. This partnership is rooted in civilizational connections, shared values, and a mutual commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region. They emphasized the importance of swiftly implementing agreed outcomes in areas such as defense, security, trade, investment, and technology.

In a separate meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi positively assessed the progress in their bilateral Strategic Partnership. The discussions highlighted advancements across sectors including trade, defense, space, science, and education. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29, and Meloni reiterated Italy's support for an India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

Modi's meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Johannesburg focused on reviewing the progress in the India-Canada partnership. The leaders welcomed the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership, which aims to enhance trilateral cooperation in critical technologies and energy sectors. They also discussed the new Roadmap for bilateral engagement established by their Foreign Ministers in October, covering trade, defense, and education.
