Geneva: The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mirjana Spoljaric Egger on Friday expressed concern over the killing of five staff members of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society this week in the North Kordofan State.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the ICRC president called on world leaders to act urgently to end the indiscriminate killing and violations taking place in Sudan, particularly in Al Fasher. In a statement issued in Geneva, Spoljaric described the situation in Sudan as "an unjustifiable humanitarian catastrophe and a flagrant violation of the rules of war," emphasizing that these attacks must stop and international humanitarian law must be respected.
She highlighted that the global community has ignored the severe conditions facing civilians in Sudan, who are enduring significant suffering. Despite ongoing appeals for the conflicting parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, violations persist with impunity, according to the ICRC chief.
Spoljaric warned that civilians are facing brutal attacks, rampant sexual violence, and the deliberate destruction of essential services. Facilities once dedicated to saving lives have become scenes of death and destruction.
The ICRC president urged leaders to demonstrate political courage to halt the violence and ensure that parties to the conflict adhere to the rules of war. She stressed that all states have the obligation not only to uphold international humanitarian law in their conduct but also to ensure that others do the same.
