IAEA Chief Calls for Restructuring of Iran Nuclear Deal

Vienna: The current Iran nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has been deemed inadequate by the UN's nuclear watchdog, highlighting the necessity to restructure the framework of the deal.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been actively engaged in finding a mutually acceptable agreement to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program. Rafael Grossi, the IAEA's director general, emphasized this during a press conference following a meeting of the UN nuclear agency's board of governors.

While discussing nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, Grossi refrained from commenting on the political aspects. He stated that the UN nuclear agency is closely monitoring the discussions and continues its role in inspecting Tehran's nuclear activities.

Grossi referenced a quarterly report on the NPT Safeguards Agreement with Tehran. This report revealed that IAEA inspection teams discovered man-made uranium particles at three undeclared sites in Iran, which suggested the existence of a structured nuclear program carried out by the country.

He urged Iran to fully cooperate with the IAEA in resolving outstanding safeguards issues. Grossi warned that Tehran's failure to do so would prevent the UN agency from assuring that Iran's nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
