GCC’s counter-terrorism efforts highlighted

Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), met with Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General of the UN Office of Counter Terrorism on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78).

 

Albudaiwi stressed that the GCC is keen to combat terrorism dry up its sources of funding and support the efforts of the United Nations (UN) Office of Counter-Terrorism to help establish international peace.

 

The meeting reviewed the efforts made by the GCC in the field of combating terrorism and its close cooperation with the international community and the UN in this field to limit the activities of extremist and terrorist groups, in addition to discussing how to develop and strengthen joint efforts to combat terrorism.

 

Vronkov announced the UN’s intention, in collaboration with Nigeria, to organise the African Summit on Counter-Terrorism in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in April 2024.

 

The summit will focus on enhancing regional cooperation, institution-building in the field of counter-terrorism, and addressing the evolving nature of terrorism in the African continent.

 

Vronkov expressed his hope that the GCC would participate in this summit to share their expertise and present their multi, successful, and advanced programmes in the fight against terrorism
