French president says ready for calm with Algeria over colonial memories

PARIS, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed Saturday readiness for a calm with Algeria over memories of colonialization and war.

In a phone call with Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune, he also proposed launching a drive to search for missing persons and repair cemeteries of Europeans in Algeria, according to a statement by the French Presidency. The two leaders also welcomed the recent positive development in bilateral relations and growing economic and security cooperation.

They also discussed the coming African-European Summit, which will chaired by France and held in Brussels on February 17-18.

This is the first call between the two leaders since a diplomatic crisis erupted between the two countries in last October, against the background of statements by the French president dismissed by Algeria as offensive.
