Geneva: The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, announced on Tuesday the conclusion of the first day of trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Umerov shared on his social media account that the discussions were divided into joint sessions and group work focused on practical issues and potential solutions. He mentioned that both the political and military tracks had completed their sessions for the day, and the Ukrainian delegation would update the President of Ukraine on the day's outcomes. The talks are set to continue with political and military groups resuming discussions the following morning.
Umerov expressed gratitude to Washington for its constructive participation, acknowledging the steady pace of work. He leads the Ukrainian delegation, while the Russian delegation is headed by President Vladimir Putin's Special Envoy, Vladimir Medinsky, and includes military and economic experts. The United States is represented by Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Earlier, Umerov stated that security and humanitarian issues were prioritized in the agenda, emphasizing Kyiv's constructive approach and realistic expectations. He highlighted the goal of advancing solutions for sustainable peace. Meanwhile, Russian media reported Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov's comments that no major announcements were expected on the first day, noting the talks addressed a broad range of fundamental issues.
The talks, hosted in Geneva under the Swiss government's auspices, are scheduled over two days. This round of negotiations occurs amidst ongoing military escalation and mutual accusations between Russia and Ukraine, challenging the peace process.
