Fighting claims multiple casualties in W. Sudan – eyewitnesses

Violence flared between army and paramilitary forces in Nyala City in western Sudan early Friday, causing multiple casualties, as clashes continued in Khartoum.

Dozens of civilians were killed in violent clashes in Nyala, one of Sudan’s largest cities and the capital of South Darfur state, where heavy artillery involving tanks were used, eyewitnesses told KUNA.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese army said in a statement that it had killed leaders of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in airstrikes on RSF outposts in Khartoum.

However, it added, scores of civilians were killed in heavy artillery attacks by paramilitary forces on Nyala City.

More than 840,000 people have been displaced within Sudan and over 220,000 have fled to neighboring countries since the outbreak of clashes between army and paramilitary forces in Khartoum and several other cities, according to latest estimates.
