Washington: Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel announced that the Chinese government designated all 13 precursors utilized to make fentanyl. This move comes as a significant step in the ongoing battle against the deadly opioid crisis in the United States.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Patel highlighted the efforts initiated by President Donald J. Trump upon assuming office. The president had issued a mandate to eliminate fentanyl, a drug responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. Patel emphasized that through President Trump's leadership and direct engagement with China, a framework was established to address this issue eight months ago. Attorney General Pamela Jo Bondi took immediate steps to engage with her Chinese counterpart at the Ministry of Public Security, setting a path to implement policies aimed at tackling the fentanyl crisis.
Patel further elaborated on the collaborative efforts, mentioning the involvement of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ambassador to China David Perdue, and the team at the White House. He noted that this collective action paved the way for his recent trip to Beijing, which was made possible by President Trump's historic engagement with President Xi Jinping. The leaders' meeting laid the groundwork for the current agreement between the United States and China.
The FBI director underscored the severity of the fentanyl crisis, stating that nearly 100,000 people died from fentanyl overdoses last year alone. Under President Trump's administration, the FBI has seized 1,900 kilograms of fentanyl this year, marking a 31 percent increase from the same period last year. Patel emphasized that addressing fentanyl precursors is crucial to combating the production of this lethal drug.
During his visit to China, Patel engaged directly with his counterparts at the Ministry of Public Security. The Chinese government agreed to a plan that involved fully designating and listing all 13 precursors used to produce fentanyl. Additionally, they committed to controlling seven chemical subsidiaries associated with the drug's production. This agreement effectively curtails the supply chain that feeds into the manufacturing of fentanyl by drug trafficking organizations.
Patel stated that this achievement reflects the tireless efforts of President Trump, the attorney general, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Ambassador Perdue in China. He described it as a historic first-of-its-kind achievement by any president in the fight against fentanyl. Patel concluded by expressing gratitude for President Trump's leadership and reaffirming the FBI's commitment to safeguarding the American public.
