EU wants to keep communication with Iran open

EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy said Friday the 27-member bloc wants to keep channels of communication with Iran open following an EU-Iran meeting in the Qatari capital Doha this week.

The meeting that the Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Enrique Mora had in Doha with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Wednesday “was part of our engagement policy with Iran,” Nabila Massarali told a news conference Friday.

“This was part of our engagement policy with Iran. We always want to keep the diplomatic channels of communication open so this is really the setting for the Dohan meeting,” she added.

Mora who is also the EU’s negotiator on Iran nuclear deal, on his twitter message today said “for the EU, JCPOA is the best possible, if not the only, framework to address the legitimate non-proliferation concerns of the international community on the Iranian nuclear program.” Ali Bagheri Kani is the Iranian chief negotiator on the Iran nuclear agreement, officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
