Brussels: The European Commission on Sunday urged the United States to adhere to the commitments established in the joint statement between the two parties, in response to a recent ruling by the US Supreme Court concerning the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and subsequent tariff hikes announced by US President Donald Trump. According to Kuwait News Agency, the Commission emphasized the importance of honoring agreements, asserting that the European Union, as the United States' largest trading partner, anticipates Washington to uphold its obligations specified in the Joint Statement, mirroring the EU's adherence to its own commitments. The Commission called for "full clarity" on the measures the United States plans to implement following the Supreme Court's decision related to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The current scenario, it noted, does not aid in achieving "fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial" trade and investment relations across the Atlantic, as outlined in the Joi nt Statement issued in August 2025. It reiterated its dedication to protecting the European Union's interests, emphasizing the necessity for European businesses and exporters to receive "fair treatment, predictability, and legal certainty." Furthermore, the Commission asserted that EU products should continue to receive the most favorable treatment, without any tariff hikes exceeding the previously agreed-upon limits. Highlighting the impact of tariffs, the EU pointed out that they increase costs for both consumers and businesses, and their unpredictable application can disrupt markets, erode confidence, and escalate uncertainty in global supply chains. The Commission stated it remains in continuous communication with the US Administration. It revealed that the EU Trade Commissioner engaged in a phone discussion with the US Trade Representative and the US Commerce Secretary on Saturday to address recent developments. Reaffirming its commitment to reducing tariffs as outlined in the Joint Statement, the Co mmission stressed that maintaining a stable and predictable transatlantic trading environment is a priority for the EU, which also aims to act as a global anchor for rules-based trade. Additionally, the European Union confirmed its intention to expand its network of ambitious "zero tariff" trade agreements worldwide and to bolster efforts supporting an open and rules-based trading system. President Donald Trump recently announced a temporary increase of global tariffs to 15 percent on imports into the US, following the Supreme Court's ruling that rendered much of his international tariffs campaign illegal.
