Brussels: The European Union (EU) has urged all involved parties to "seize the moment" and initiate efforts towards peace following the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) announcement to cease its armed struggle against the Turkish state.
According to Kuwait News Agency, EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized the importance of initiating a credible peace process. He stated, "The European Union considers that launching a credible peace process, aiming for a political solution to the Kurdish issue, would be a positive step to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution." The PKK announced earlier in the day its decision to disband and lay down arms in Turkiye after a 40-year-long campaign.
The EU's call for peace highlights the opportunity for both sides to work towards resolving the long-standing conflict. The PKK's decision marks a significant shift in its approach after decades of armed struggle, which has been a source of tension and violence in the region.
The European Union's involvement underscores the international interest in resolving the Kurdish issue through dialogue and political means. The EU's support for a peaceful resolution could play a crucial role in fostering a stable and harmonious future for the region.
