EU “regrets” shipwreck off Tunisian coast

The European Commission Monday expressed “deep regrets” for the tragic shipwrecking off the Tunisian coast on Sunday.

“We cannot stress this enough. Every single life lost in the Mediterranean is one too many” an European Commission spokesperson . Anitta Hipper, told a news conference in Brussels.

According to media reports, at least 29 people lost their lives while trying to reach Italy after two boats carrying them across the Mediterranean sank off the coast of Tunisia.

According to UN data, at least 12,000 migrants who reached Italy this year set sail from Tunisia, compared with 1,300 in the same period of 2022. Previously, Libya was the main departure point to Europe for migrants. (end) nk.mb
