The European Union has announced the activation of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (Copernicus EMS), the body responsible for managing natural disasters in the EU, to provide urgent aid to Spain in response to the worst natural disaster to hit the country in recent memory.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday in a press conference that Brussels stands ready to help Spain in its crisis describing the images coming from Spain as “devastating.” Von der Leyen added that Europe has already begun providing the necessary support and assistance to Spain by activating the EUÂ’s Copernicus programme. The Spanish authorities have confirmed a death toll of 63 people on Wednesday due to the floods caused by the storm that hit eastern Spain and spread to other areas, causing significant material damage.
