EU High Representative Calls Syria Ceasefire a Crucial Move to Prevent Chaos

Brussels: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas emphasized the significance of a ceasefire agreement between Syria's interim authorities and the Syrian Democratic Forces, highlighting it as a critical measure to avert the nation from descending into chaos. She noted this development as essential for strengthening and consolidating state functions and institutions.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Kallas issued a statement on behalf of the European Union, urging an immediate halt to all military activities. She underscored the necessity for full adherence to de-escalation commitments and the safeguarding of civilians. The EU, she stated, remains committed to facilitating a genuinely inclusive political transition in Syria. This process requires the integration of military, security, and civilian institutions into cohesive state structures, along with significant political and local involvement.

Kallas also highlighted the importance of fully protecting Kurdish rights in any forthcoming political proceedings in Syria. She reiterated the need for Syria to reaffirm its commitment to counterterrorism within the framework of the Global Coalition. This, she noted, is vital for preventing any potential resurgence of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).
