EU extends mandates of Special Rep. for Horn of Africa, three other regions

BRUSSELS, The European Union Foreign Affairs Council Monday decided to extend the mandate of the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for Horn of Africa Annette Weber for two years, until 31 August 2024.

Ms Weber from Germany was first appointed on 21 June 2021, according to a Council statement.

The Council also decided to extend the mandate of Emanuela Claudia Del Re from EUSR for the Sahel for two years, until 31 August 2024. Ms Del Re from Italy was first appointed on 21 June 2021.

The mandate for Miroslav Lajcak as the EUSR for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkans regional issues, was extended for two years, until 31 August 2024. Lajcak from Slovak Republic was first appointed on 2 April 2020.

Toivo Klaar had his mandate as EUSR for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia extended for an additional year, until 31 August 2023. Klaar from Estonia was first appointed on 13 November 2017.

The EU Special Representatives are proposed by the EU High Representative to promote the EU’s policies and interests in specific regions and countries, and provide the EU with an active political presence in those areas. The first EUSRs were appointed in 1996.
