The European Union Foreign Affairs Council decided on Thursday to extend sanctions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy by six months. The sanctions will extend until 31 January 2024 and aims to target specific sectors of the Russian economy, a statement by the council said.
Russia is currently under sanctions, which include restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, industry, transport and luxury goods.
The sanctions also cover a ban on the import or transfer of seaborne crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU, the removal of several Russian banks from the international banking SWIFT system, and the suspension of the broadcasting activities and licenses of several Russian news outlets.
Additionally, specific measures were introduced to strengthen the ability of the EU to counter sanctions circumvention.
Since 24 February 2022, the EU has adopted 11 packages of sanctions against Moscow in response to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.
