EU Commission President Hails Historic Election of Japan’s First Female Prime Minister


Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday extended her congratulations to Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, marking the first time a woman has held this prestigious position in Japan’s history. Von der Leyen highlighted the significance of this event as a “historic moment.” In a message shared on X, she stated, “Warm congratulations, Sanae Takaichi, on your election as Japan’s Prime Minister,” emphasizing that Takaichi’s election represents “a milestone in women’s leadership.” She also expressed a strong desire to collaborate closely with Prime Minister Takaichi to elevate the unique partnership between the EU and Japan, particularly focusing on enhancing cooperation in competitiveness and security.



According to Kuwait News Agency, EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola also offered her congratulations to Takaichi. Metsola described the election as “a historic event reflecting progress and democracy in Japan.” In her message on X, she reiterated her commitment to further strengthening the robust partnership between the European Union and Japan, with a particular emphasis on trade and economic cooperation. Metsola expressed optimism that this new leadership would foster “greater closeness and collaboration for the benefit of the peoples of Europe and Japan.”
