Brussels: European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho announced that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to visit the Arctic region next March, including a stop in Greenland. The visit aims to strengthen economic ties between the European Union and Greenland.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Pinho informed reporters in Brussels that while the visit is planned for March, specific dates and additional details are yet to be confirmed. Von der Leyen's trip to Greenland will focus on presenting a package of initiatives to bolster economic relations, following her commitment last January to initiate a significant European investment effort to support Greenland and enhance its partnerships with the EU.
This announcement occurs amidst ongoing tensions between the European Union and the United States, following former President Donald Trump's controversial threats to annex Greenland, a mineral-rich territory under Denmark's jurisdiction.
