Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed on Saturday her support for the proposal of a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. In a post on X, von der Leyen stated that the ceasefire must be implemented "without any preconditions" as a first step toward launching "meaningful" peace negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. According to Kuwait News Agency, von der Leyen emphasized that the responsibility now lies with Russia to act. She noted that the EU and its allies are prepared to sustain maximum pressure on Russia, which includes the option of imposing further "biting" sanctions if the proposed ceasefire is violated. Von der Leyen further stated that the primary goal is to achieve a "just and lasting peace for Ukraine," highlighting that such peace is crucial for the security and stability of the entire European continent. The move underscores the EU's commitment to finding a resolution to the conflict and ensuring long-term peace in the region.
