EU annual inflation drops

European Union annual inflation was 7.1 percent in May, down from 8.1 percent in April however, it was 8.8 percent a year earlier, according to the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat.

Annual inflation in the euro area in May was down to 6.1 percent from 7.0 percent in April. A year earlier, the rate was 8.1 percent, the Eurostat published these figures Friday.

Compared with April, annual inflation fell in twenty-six EU member states and rose in one.

In May, the highest contribution to the annual euro area inflation rate came from food, and tobacco, followed by services, non-energy industrial goods and energy.
