Brussels: The European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council have issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This comes amidst growing tensions in the region, where commercial vessels have been targets of attacks. According to European Union, the statement strongly condemns the actions carried out by Iran against vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks not only endangered civilian lives and mariners but also violated international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817. The joint statement emphasizes that such actions are entirely unjustifiable. The EU and GCC reject any unlawful assertions of sovereignty over the Strait by any State. They oppose any regimes of permits or fees imposed on international shipping, underscoring that the right of passage through international straits is guaranteed under international law and cannot be subjected to the control of any single State. The statement also conveys full solidarity with the affected States, including Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, and Jordan. It highlights the broader concern for the safety of this crucial waterway, as an attack on one is deemed a threat to all who depend on it. Furthermore, the EU and GCC call on Iran to immediately cease all attacks and interference with maritime navigation. They demand the Strait of Hormuz remain open and free from conditions, tolls, or fees, urging compliance with international law and Security Council resolutions. In their efforts to maintain maritime security, the EU and GCC pledge continued coordination to uphold freedom of navigation and protect international shipping. They stress the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the crisis and advancing peace and security in the region.
