Egypt emphasizes settling Syrian crisis attainable through political solution

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri affirmed on Sunday that the sole avenue for settling the Syrian crisis is through a political solution free of outside intervention.

Shukri, addressing the 159th session of the Arab League Ministerial Council, underscored necessity of reaching national consensus among the Syrian parties, rebuilding confidence, pursuing meetings of the constitutional commission in line with “international references namely the Security Council Resolution 2254.” Affirming the necessity to rid Syrian of foreign intervention, he stressed on maintaining its sovereignty and independence.

Moreover, he called for “crushing all forms of terrorism, its organizations,” creating proper conditions for return of the Syrian refugees “to open the gates for reconstruction and boost stability in the whole Arab region.” “While Arab States shoulder the responsibility for pushing the political solution forward we stress that the Syrian government must shoulder the main responsibility for reaching a settlement,” Shukri affirmed, noting that the Syrian people after years of hardships “have become alone in the face of accumulating challenges.” Today’s session is addressing the Syrian crisis that began in 2011.
