EC: Aid Must Reach Those in Need in Gaza Strip, Says Von der Leyen

Brussels: President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that the situation in the Gaza Strip is intolerable. "Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in need-at once, and at scale," she emphasized in a post on X after meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

According to Kuwait News Agency, during her discussions with Sanchez, von der Leyen highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed the EU's strong call for Israel to lift the blockade on the region. The meeting also covered the EU-Jordan Partnership and the situation in Syria. Additionally, von der Leyen commended Spain's efforts to increase its defense spending, pointing out the significance of the upcoming long-term EU defense budget in enhancing the security of Europe, with contributions from Member States and the private sector.

The meeting, described by von der Leyen as "good," focused on strengthening European cooperation amidst growing global challenges. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez called on the European Commission to take urgent measures to halt what he termed as the "illegal invasion" by the Israeli occupation government in Gaza. He urged the EU to increase diplomatic pressure, suspend its Association Agreement with Israel, and implement sanctions.
