London: UK Defence Secretary John Healey chaired the E5 Group of Five Defence Summit on Wednesday, focusing on strengthening NATO's air defence over Poland following recent incursions by Russian drones. Healey, speaking after discussions with defence officials from Poland, Italy, France, and Germany, emphasized the need for a unified response to the threats. According to Kuwait News Agency, Healey mentioned that the UK military has been tasked with exploring ways to enhance NATO's air defence capabilities in Poland. This move comes after Russia's drones entered Polish territory and were subsequently shot down. Healey highlighted the E5 Group's firm message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that his actions only serve to reinforce the unity and resolve of NATO nations to support Ukraine. Healey further accused Putin of "testing" Western allies through these incursions during a broader attack on western Ukraine. He pointed out that the West is confronting a "new era of threat," with Russia display ing heightened hostility towards Europe. Healey concluded his remarks by affirming the E5 nations' commitment to increasing defence spending and readiness, highlighting their unity and determination to address the evolving threats. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also underlined the Alliance's vigilance and commitment to defending its territory, sending a strong message to Putin. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the violation of Polish and NATO airspace by Russian drones, labeling it an "extremely reckless" act by Moscow. In his statement, Starmer condemned the attack on Ukraine and the unprecedented breach of airspace, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
