Costa: Lifting EU Sanctions on Syria Real Opportunity for Recovery

Brussels: European Council President Antonio Costa stated that the European Union's decision to lift economic sanctions on Syria is "a real opportunity" for the country's recovery and reconstruction, highlighting the importance of leveraging this chance to foster a constructive future partnership.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Costa made these comments following a phone call with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa. The two leaders initially met in Cairo last March. During their call, Costa reiterated the EU's willingness to support Syria's journey towards stability and reform. He also welcomed President Al-Sharaa's commitment to a democratic transition and his vision for rebuilding Syria as a stable economy, open to investment, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Costa mentioned that President Al-Sharaa expressed appreciation for the EU's "historic decision" and showed interest in initiating a high-level dialogue between Damascus and Brussels in the near future.
