Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday emphasized the necessity for China and the European Union to maintain openness and cooperation while effectively managing their differences.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Xi conveyed these messages during discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. The EU leaders were in Beijing to participate in the 25th China-EU Summit, which commemorates five decades of diplomatic relations between China and the EU.
Xi referred to the current phase as a "historic turning point" in China-EU relations, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. He highlighted that the past 50 years have resulted in productive cooperation that has been advantageous for both parties and the global community.
Xi underscored the necessity of mutual respect and shared benefits, emphasizing the importance of focusing on consensus over differences. He acknowledged the cultural and systemic disparities but dismissed the idea of unavoidable conflict or geopolitical rivalry, asserting that China is not the source of Europe's challenges.
Xi further stated that the China-EU relationship is independent of any third-party influence and called for Europe to respect China's core interests and its chosen development path. He warned against economic decoupling and trade barriers, advocating for an open business environment instead.
European leaders reiterated their dedication to strengthening relations with China, addressing differences constructively, and adhering to the UN Charter to address global challenges and promote peace and stability.
