Beijing: China on Sunday firmly opposed the recent U.S. decision to impose an additional 10-percent tariff on goods imported from China for allegedly trading in chemical substances used in fentanyl drug.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Ministry of Commerce of China announced it would file a complaint at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and take corresponding countermeasures to safeguard its rights and interests. The ministry criticized the U.S. unilateral imposition of extra tariffs, stating it seriously violates WTO rules and would not resolve existing issues but rather disrupt economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The ministry urged the U.S. to address its fentanyl and related issues objectively and rationally, instead of frequently using tariffs as a threat. It called on the U.S. to correct its mistakes and work collaboratively with China to meet each other halfway. The statement emphasized the importance of facing problems directly, engaging in candid dialogues, strengthening cooperation, and managing differences based on equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect.
Additionally, Canada and Mexico announced earlier that they would impose tariffs on American products in response to similar measures announced by U.S. President Donald Trump against the two countries.
