Kuala lumpur: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday criticized the US trade policy, stating that the imposition of additional tariffs on states around the globe breaches World Trade Organization's rules. The criticism was made during the annual ASEAN ministerial conference, which concluded in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Wang emphasized that the US's high tariffs on imports have disrupted supply chains and slowed down the recovery of the global economy. In remarks broadcast by the Chinese television channel, CCTV, Wang described US President Donald Trump's levies as "irresponsible, unpopular and will not last."
Wang highlighted Beijing's own trade policies, noting that China had enforced zero tariffs on imports from Africa and other under-developed states. This approach contrasts with Trump's declared plans to impose high fees on imports from various parts of the world, a strategy he has acknowledged as a means to protect and boost industries within the US.
