The Secretary of State of the Vatican City, Prime Minister Cardinal Pietro Parolin, expressed his deep concern about the unprecedented escalation in the Gaza Strip and the deteriorating conditions in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
During his visit to the Embassy of the State of Palestine to the Holy See, today, Tuesday, Parolin spoke about the Pope’s contacts in order to stop this war, in which most of the victims were civilians.
He expressed the position of the Holy See, which was expressed by the Pope in the past days , that there is no choice but to implement the resolutions of international legitimacy and reach the two-state solution, recalling that the Vatican recognized the State of Palestine on the 67 borders in 2015 .
The Cardinal affirmed that the Holy See considers the Palestine Liberation Organization the sole legitimate representative, and that President Mahmoud Abbas is the legitimate president and representative of the Palestinian people, expressing the Pope’s appreciation for the President’s wise positions on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions, and that the Pope prays and works for justice and peace in the Holy Land, Including achieving the national legitimate rights of the Palestinian people .
For his part, Ambassador Issa Qassisieh called for an end to the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, respect for international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, and an end to targeting and displacing civilians, and that it is of the utmost importance in these moments to open humanitarian corridors and provide medical and relief aid, and to refuse to displace Palestinians from their homes or to their homes. Outside Gaza, because that would be a second Nakba.
He recalled the president’s position of rejecting the killing of civilians, the necessity of adhering to international legitimacy and agreements, and the importance of the international community to open diplomatic and political horizons within the framework based on international legitimacy to end the occupation of the land of the State of Palestine with its capital, East Jerusalem, on the 1967 borders and on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative.
He stressed the importance of the work of the Holy See to urge European countries and those who do not recognize the Palestinian state to recognize it before it is too late .
The two sides discussed the situation in the occupied city of Jerusalem, the position of the Holy See, the importance of respecting the historical and legal status in Islamic and Christian holy places, and the escalation of the colonialists’ attacks on Palestinian cities, villages and camps.
