Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations. Carney emphasized Canada's longstanding commitment to a two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestinian state existing peacefully alongside Israel. This announcement was made during a press conference following a cabinet meeting.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Carney stated that this decision is based on the Palestinian Authority's commitment to essential reforms. The Palestinian Authority's President Mahmoud Abbas has assured Carney that his administration will conduct long-delayed elections in 2026 and has committed to ensuring that the state of Palestine remains non-militarized.
Carney also discussed the situation in Gaza with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The leaders addressed the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region and the United Kingdom's position regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state, as noted in a statement from Carney's office.
