Building Collapse Claims 21 Lives in Southern Pakistan


Karachi: At least 21 people, including nine women, lost their lives after a five-story residential building collapsed in Pakistan’s southern Karachi city, said authorities on Saturday. Head of the rescue operation at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) confirmed the tragic incident in a statement.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari area resulted in the deaths of nine women, 11 men, and a boy. Nine others sustained injuries in the incident. The five-story building that collapsed on Friday was home to six families.

Rescue teams are continuing their search and rescue operations using heavy machinery. The rescue operation, which involves over 200 personnel, is approximately 80 percent complete. The official overseeing the efforts noted that caution is being exercised to avoid causing harm to any potential trapped survivors.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities have evacuated adjacent buildings.
