Brussels Syria conf. raises EUR 5.9 bln

The 7th Brussels conference on Syria concluded Thursday evening after pledging EUR 5.9 billion (USD 6.4 billion), announced Janez Lenarcici, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management in closing remarks.

“We have raised together a total pledge of EUR 5.9 billion in grants of which for 2023 is EUR 4.6 billion (USD 5 billion), and for 2024 and beyond EUR 1 billion (USD 1 billion),” he said.

“The EU and its member states represent the 70% of the grants pledged with EUR 3.8 billion (USD 4.1 billion),” he said.

In addition to grants, international financial institutions and donors have announced loans on concessional terms in the amount of EUR 4 billion (USD 4.3 billion).

“This means that we have collectively raised this year EUR 9.6 billion (USD 10.3 billion) in grants and loans,” he said.

This is EUR 800 million more than what we achieved last year in Brussels 6 conference, he said, adding, “This is tangible demonstration that the international community stands by the Syrian people.” Earlier today, EU High Representative Josep Borrell told a press conference that the meeting gathered Ministers and representatives from 57 countries and over 30 international organisations, including the United Nations. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres addressed the Conference via a video link.

Ambassador Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations, represented the State of Kuwait at the one-day meeting. (pickup previous)
