Borrell proposes 500 mln euro more for arms for Ukraine

BRUSSELS, European Union High Representative Josep Borrell Monday said he has proposed to the EU foreign ministers to approve 500 million euro (USD 507 million) more in military support for Ukraine.

“Ukraine needs more arms, we will provide them. That is why I have proposed the next tranche of the European Peace Facility, allocating 500 euro million more. There has been political agreement on this proposal today,” he told reporters after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels today.

Meanwhile, an EU statement this evening said that at the beginning of the meeting the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, addressed EU ministers via video conference, and briefed them about the latest developments on the ground and the dramatic effects of the war on the civilian population in the country and food security worldwide.

The EU will continue to support Ukraine in implementing its reform agenda within the European perspective, after it was recently granted the status of EU candidate country, it said.

Further, the EU Foreign Affairs Council discussed developments in Tunisia, in the run-up to the constitutional referendum on 25 July. Ministers stressed the importance for Tunisia to move towards institutional normalcy and to preserve the democratic set up. An inclusive national dialogue is a cornerstone of any credible constitutional process and long-term stability, it said.

The Council touched on the situation in Sri Lanka and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It also held a discussion on EU relations with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and noted that these countries have been badly affected by the negative consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine, in particular by rising prices and shortages of food, fertilisers and energy.
