Seoul: Boeing and Korean Air have announced the airline's intent to purchase 103 of Boeing's fuel-efficient airplanes to modernize its fleet and support growth as it integrates operations with Asiana Airlines in the coming years. This commitment represents the largest-ever order for Korean Air and Boeing's largest widebody order from an Asian carrier. Once finalized, the deal will signify Korean Air's first order for the 777-8F and is expected to support approximately 135,000 jobs across the United States.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air, stated, "This agreement with our long-standing partners, Boeing and GE, marks a pivotal moment for Korean Air." Cho emphasized that acquiring these next-generation aircraft is vital to Korean Air's fleet modernization strategy, aiming to improve fuel efficiency and enhance the passenger experience on a global scale. This investment is also seen as crucial for the future of the merged airline with Asiana, ensuring competitiveness in the industry. The agreement was signed during the Korea-US Business Roundtable "Partnership for a Manufacturing Renaissance," attended by US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan.
Korean Air's orders and commitments for Boeing airplanes in 2025 will exceed 150 units, building on an incremental order made in March. Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed honor in strengthening the partnership with Korean Air through this landmark agreement, highlighting the value and capabilities of Boeing's airplane family. As Korean Air evolves into a larger unified carrier, Boeing is committed to supporting its growth with an efficient fleet. Currently, Korean Air operates 108 Boeing airplanes, and with 72 Boeing jets on order, their order book will expand to 175 airplanes once the deal is finalized. Korean Air's Aerospace Division also contributes to Boeing's operations by supplying components for the 787 Dreamliner and producing parts for the 737 MAX, 767, and 777 family of airplanes.
