BNP’s Tarique Rahman Takes Oath as Bangladesh PM

Wellington: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman took oath as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday: Bangladesh's Prothomalo reported that Bangladesh President Md Sahabuddin administered the oath of office to Tarique Rahman at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Other members of the cabinet also took oath after Tarique Rahman.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the new government would be comprising of 25 ministers and 24 state ministers. In the 13th national parliamentary election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had secured a decisive victory winning 209 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition won 68 seats.

With the oath taking of Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh is expected to enter into a new era as political turmoil had toppled the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nobel peace winner Muhammad Yunus who had took charge as the head of the interim government, announced earlier the resignation of his government. Awami League of former PM Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after the collapse of her government, was banned from participating in the elections.
