Brussels: Belgium expressed its "full support" for the Qatari mediation efforts aimed at bringing representatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government and the M23 rebel movement to the negotiating table for peace talks in Doha.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Pr©vot praised the agreement reached between the DRC and the M23 to pursue a truce and ceasefire that could lead to dialogue aimed at restoring peace in eastern DRC. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Pr©vot described the agreement as an essential step toward ending the ongoing violence in Congo.
The Belgian minister also announced his plans to visit the region starting this Friday, emphasizing his "full support for these efforts facilitated by Qatar" to reach a sustainable agreement. Qatar took on the mediator role last month after previous African-led mediation attempts stalled, organizing a pivotal meeting between Congolese President F©lix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. During this meeting, both leaders called for a ceasefire and have since sent delegations to Doha to explore a potential peace agreement.
