Manama: Bahraini Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa inaugurated the 400 kV Al Jasra power station, marking it as the largest electricity transmission station in the Kingdom. The opening of Al Jasra station represents a significant development in Bahrain’s national electricity grid, which has its origins in 1930 when Manama became the first Gulf capital to receive electricity.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that this advancement underscores Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to modernization and development, aiming to enhance national infrastructure and support sustainable growth. The project is crucial for improving the stability of the national electricity grid, boosting operational capacity to support urban and investment growth, enhancing service quality, and meeting both current and future demand effectively.
The President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), Kamal bin Ahmad, stated that the project is a part of the EWA’s strategic initiatives to enhance the reliability and sustainability of electricity and water services. The project involved constructing a 400/220 kV transmission station in Al Jasra, installing over 120 kilometers of 400 kV high-voltage cables and approximately 96 kilometers of 220 kV cables, and integrating them into the national grid.
The upgrade of the Gulf Cooperation Council interconnection from 200 kV to 400 kV is another key aspect of the project. This enhancement increases interconnection capacity with GCC countries from 926 to 1,359 megawatts, thereby improving energy exchange efficiency and grid stability.
