Authorities Report 30 Fatalities and Massive Evacuation Amid Severe Flooding in Northern China

Beijing: At least 30 people have died in Beijing, and more than 80,000 have been evacuated as northern China experiences days of heavy rains and flooding, Chinese authorities announced on Tuesday.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Xinhua News Agency cited the National Meteorological Center (NMC) as reporting that the average rainfall in Yanqing district reached 165.9 millimeters, with Miyun recording the highest amount at 543.4 millimeters.

The floods have caused widespread damage, including the destruction of 31 roads, power outages in 136 villages, and disruption of 62 fiber-optic cables and 1,825 telecommunications stations. Late Monday, Beijing issued its highest-level flood alert for geological disasters, urging the closure of all tourist sites, suspension of public activities, and advising residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Hebei province, four people were killed and eight remain missing following a rain-induced landslide in Chengde city.

China's Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) are collaborating to allocate 350 million yuan (USD 49 million) to support rescue operations, rebuild homes, and assist affected residents. Additionally, over 43,000 emergency supplies have been dispatched to the disaster zones.
