Arab League prioritizes disaster risk reduction

The Arab League said Thursday that it and its member states give top priority to disaster risk reduction through an action program purposed to put a relevant previously passed strategy in place.

The remark was made by the League’s Secretary-General Ahmad Abul Gheit in a speech delivered on his behalf by the bloc’s housing, water resources and disaster reduction department, Jamal Al-Deen Jaballah, during a meeting of Arab ministers responsible for disaster risk reduction.

He vowed that the league would put all necessary potentials at disposal for addressing and alleviating disasters, pointing out a collective Arab mechanism of integration and cooperation in case of disasters.

He boasted that the Arab League has long experience in this regard, and has made, over years, valuable and robust contributions to the provision of financial and material aid to disaster-affected countries.

Kuwait’s deputy permanent representative at the Arab League, Falah Al-Mutairi, led his country’s delegation partaking in the gathering.

Representatives from Arab Countries, along with a number of Arab, regional and international organizations concerned with disaster risk reduction attended the meeting.
