Cairo: The Arab League on Wednesday underscored the importance of adopting the draft Arab Convention on Personal Data Protection to ensure information security and safeguard digital privacy across member states within the Arab region. This step is seen as crucial in the face of increasing digital challenges and the need for unified regional standards. According to Kuwait News Agency, this declaration was made during the opening of the third meeting of the joint committee of experts and representatives from Arab ministries of justice, interior, and relevant authorities. The meeting, chaired by Algeria, saw active participation from Kuwait among others. Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Maha Bakhit, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Arab League, highlighted in her speech that the draft convention is a result of the Council of Arab Ministers of Justice's decision No. (37), which was initiated by Algeria. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive Arab framework for protecting personal data. B akhit emphasized the draft convention as a critical move toward bolstering Arab cooperation in data protection. She pointed out that the convention is pivotal for ensuring digital privacy amidst the swift technological changes occurring both regionally and globally. The meeting's agenda includes finalizing discussions on the draft convention's articles, preparing its final version, and making recommendations for the upcoming joint session of Arab Ministers of Justice and Interior, which is scheduled for November.
