Arab League Convenes Extraordinary Session to Address Israeli Occupation in Gaza

Cairo: The extraordinary session of the Arab League at the level of permanent delegates, chaired by Jordan, commenced on Sunday to discuss strategies to counter the Israeli occupation's actions in the Gaza Strip. The session is pivotal in addressing the recent developments following Israel's announcement of its intent to reoccupy Gaza.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in his opening remarks, Jordan's Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Amjad Al-Adhayleh, highlighted the grave implications of Israel's announcement to fully control the Gaza Strip. He described this move as a dangerous escalation and an illegal act of aggression, which has been met with widespread condemnation from the international community. The announcement is seen as a reinforcement of aggression, violating international law and humanitarian principles.

Ambassador Al-Adhayleh further referenced the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which has affirmed the illegality of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the urgent need for its cessation. This opinion underscores the violation of international law and the Palestinian right to self-determination.

Palestinian representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, echoed concerns about Israel's intentions. He stated that Israel's decision reveals an agenda to entrench colonialism and displace Palestinians from their land. Ambassador Al-Aklouk criticized Israel's disregard for international resolutions and highlighted the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, demanding an end to the occupation.

In his address, Ambassador Al-Aklouk called for international protection for the Palestinian people, emphasizing that this is a right mandated by international law and the United Nations Charter. He held the international community accountable for its failure to protect a population facing genocide, starvation, and ethnic cleansing.

The emergency session was convened at the request of Palestine and with the backing of Arab states, in response to Israel's decision to reoccupy Gaza. This decision threatens to forcibly displace Palestinians and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
