Cairo: President of the Arab Commission for Human Rights, Talal Al-Mutairi, denounced the Israeli occupation forces' aggression on the besieged Palestinian people in Gaza Strip as "a complete crime of genocide." The Israeli occupation forces' cutting off of the food supplies to the Palestinians in Gaza is a despicable crime, he said in a speech to celebration to mark Arab Human Rights Day 2025 in Cairo on Monday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the event, hosted by the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights in cooperation with the Arab Charter Committee on Human Rights, was held under the theme of "the right to food." Ambassador Al-Mutairi stated that the criminal acts of the Israeli occupation undermine the entire international human rights system founded over the last decades.
Urging the international community to help address the crisis in Gaza and the flaw in the international human rights system, Al-Mutairi emphasized the urgency of the situation, suggesting that failure to act promptly would prevent finding short-term remedies for the consequences. He further elaborated on the theme of the event, underscoring that the right to food is inseparable from the rest of human rights, and is an integral part of the rights to life, health, and development.
Ambassador Al-Mutairi argued that a hungry human being can never feel dignity and a community lacking food security can never ensure stability and progress. He also called upon all parties to action the spirit of the Arab Charter on Human Rights, which provides a legal framework and basic point of reference for the region.
President of the Arab League's Arab Charter Committee on Human Rights, Jaber Al-Marri, emphasized that the Charter is "the cornerstone of our legal and moral commitment to strengthening human rights in the region." He highlighted the roles of national committees in protecting human rights on the regional level, including the efforts of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRIs).
Other speakers at the event included President of the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights Moshira Khattab, ANNHRIs' Secretary-General Sultan Al-Jamali, and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Legislative and Legal Affairs of the Arab Parliament Olwi Al-Basha.
