Additional Tasks For NATO Mission In Iraq Related To Advice And Support For The Work Of The Ministry Of The Interior

The NATO mission in Iraq announced it will carry out additional tasks in the areas of “advice and capacity building”.

The task of the NATO mission in Iraq will also include “advisory activities and capacity-building activities in support of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and the Federal Police Command,” based on “a request from the Iraqi authorities and a decision of the North Atlantic Council on August 17, 2023,” according to a mission statement.

In this context, Lieutenant General José Antonio Aguero Martinez, Commander of the NATO Mission in Iraq, visited the Iraqi National Security Advisor , Qassim Al-Araji, to “present the exchange letter from the North Atlantic Council.”

NATO had discussed, at its summit in Lithuania, last July, expanding its mission in Iraq at the request of the Iraqi government, to include providing advice to the Ministry of Interior on the work of the federal police, stressing that the mission of NATO is being implemented “with the full approval of the Iraqi authorities.” .

NATO leaders affirmed their commitment and allies to support Iraq to “achieve stability in the country,” praising the “continued efforts and progress made by the Iraqi government and security forces to combat the terrorist ISIS.”
