110th session of conf. of supervisors on Palestinian affairs kicks off in Cairo

The 110th session of the Conference of Supervisors on Palestinian Affairs in Host Arab Countries kicked off in Cairo on Sunday 16/7/2023.

The five-day gathering is held at the Arab League (AL) general secretariat under the chairmanship of Ahmed Abu Houli, head of the refugees division at the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Attending the talks are representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, in addition to Arab and Islamic organizations concerned with the file of refugees, atop of which the AL.

Addressing the conference, AL assistant secretary general for Palestine and the occupied Arab lands Saeid Abu Ali asked participants to observe a minute of silence in mourning of martyrs of Jenin.

This meeting is held amid hazardous developments, with a far-right Israeli government taking charge and adopting a policy meant to terminate the two-state solution altogether, or any possibility for an independent Palestinian state to materialize, Abu Ali said.

He talked about Israeli attempts to target archaeological sites with historical backgrounds, noting that this is done with the aim to obliterate the Arab identity of those places and to falsify the authentic story of the conflict.

Israel is waging a declared and open war with an escalation of infiltrations and attacks – the latest of which in Jenin Camp – Abu Ali further said.

About 203 Palestinians have been killed and 3,373 others arrested in continued Israeli attacks on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip since the beginning of 2023, he made it clear.

The Israeli government is working to further expand its settlement activities, as well as the demolition of Palestinian houses, especially in the occupied East Jerusalem, Abu Ali added.

This is part of Israeli moves to fully Judaize the Old City, he said, pointing to daily incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque in an attempt to temporally and spatially divide it and change its existing legal status.

All this is done amid suspicious international silence, Abu Ali regretted, noting that Israel is still seen as a country above the law.

He called on the world community, especially the UN Security Council, to realize the serious repercussions of the Israeli policies for the region and to live up to its responsibility in protecting the Palestinian people.

Abu Ali also greatly appreciated efforts exerted by Arab countries hosting Palestinian refugees and thanked them for their support for the UNRWA.
